O avião experimental Solar Impulse HB-SIA, se tornou a primeira aeronave tripulada que funciona apenas com energia solar a fazer um voo superior a 24 horas, incluindo o período noturno.O voo durou 26 horas. As asas leves, de fibra de carbono, dominam a aeronave: é lá que estão as 12 mil células fotovoltaicas, que absorvem a energia do Sol, que é convertida em energia, armazenada em pilhas de lítio, semelhantes às dos automóveis elétricos. Essa energia tem de ser gerida pelo piloto durante a noite, até voltar o Sol, planando e aproveitando as correntes - como um inseto que se deixa levar no vento.
